The Altar of Ghent, also known as "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb", is by far the greatest masterpiece of old Flemish painting. Housed within the cathedral it is visited by huge numbers of tourists every year. The legend has it that the painting was begun in 1420 by Hubert van Eyck and was completed by his brother in 1431. It is unclear how true this is, but the painting is amazing whatever the story.
