The ramparts have been a feature of this town for well over a thousand years. The first examples of walls would have been put in place around the 8th Century when the castle was constructed, and they would have remained an important lie of defence for the town for many hundreds of years. Visitors can still follow the line of the walls and achieve a lovely aspect of the town.
