This wonderful iconic symbol of the area was constructed in the 14th Century and was meant to be a lasting reminder of the autonomy of the city which was granted around this time. Unlike this position of power, the tower has remained and is a celebrated part of the community. In 1913 a new bell tower was added to be a part of the World Exhibition that visited Belgium at that time.
