This canal is one of the reasons that this community was built, and expended in such a way to be a relatively large village. The waterway was built in order to serve as the main connection between three of the major places in Belgium, Oostende, Gent and Brugge. Although some light trade still uses the canal, it is mainly now used for pleasure cruises and walks beside the banks.
