The current citadel in Dinant was built in 1820 by the Dutch as a fortress and lookout post, overlooking the main body of the community. The vast structure is well worth the climb to see in all its glory. It replaced the ruins of the former fortifications which had been built in 1051 under the orders of the Prince Bishop of Liege to defend the river.
