The Gent Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1798 and is one of the oldest and best respected collections anywhere in Belgium. There is a large permanent collection on display that numbers around three hundred and fifty pieces, drawn from a varied background that takes in most of the major schools of European art. There is a definite bias towards Flemish art from the Middle Ages through until the mid 20th Century.
