Joseph Poelaert worked as an architect in Belgium and across the world during the 1800s. He was favoured by King Leopold of Belgium and therefore chosen to create a beautiful Palace of Justice at the heart of the city. Leopold was a very ambitious man as well as leader and was determined to make the capital of Belgium the most beautiful and architecturally prestigious on the planet. The result was this marvellous building, a testament to the work of both king and architect.
