At one stage in the medieval Europe, the whole of Brussels would have been encircled by a great stone wall that protected the fine city from aggressive attack. It was at the end of the 19th Century that it was deemed that the wall was probably no longer required. This huge gateway remains as a listing reminder of the great wall, an original part of the structure.
