Ivo Van Damme was one of the most talented sportspeople ever to have been produced by this country, winning a silver medal at the Montreal Olympic Games and promising to go on and do so much more. Sadly he was killed in a car crash, and this memorial was erected in his memory, as well as the annual memorial games being held in his honour at the heart of the city.
