The Belfry is the only remaining part of the medieval Cloth Halls, which were once an important part of the trade in the city. The god of trade, Mercurius was put on top of the belfry in order to encourage better commerce in the 18th Century. The great tower looms over the city and is one of the most recognised monuments anywhere in the locality.
