The town centre has been fortified with battlements and ramparts on several occasions throughout its history. The current ramparts that can be seen are known as the ‘Dutch’ Ramparts they were put in place over a fifteen year period in the early 19th Century by the Dutch. It is possible to follow the path of certain sections of the walls and achieve interesting views of the area.
