The Casemates are a part of the main fortifications of the town, and are underground bunkers that are set into the bottom of many parts of the main ramparts. The small cellar like tunnels and rooms are bomb proof and have been used for a variety of purposes throughout the years, including as shelters against bombing in the First World War.
