The Hammer Viaduct was originally constructed in 1840 and was believed to be one of the modern architectural wonders of the nation. Sadly, like so many of the great pieces that existed before the 20th Century, it was destroyed during the conflicts of the 20th Century. Interestingly though, the people of the area refused to live without a fine bridge, and work was undertaken to replace the viaduct with this superb modern railway bridge.
