Pieter Braecke is recognised as being one of the most talented sculptors in Belgium and certainly one of the best in this region of the country. His Memorial to Ijzer is a masterpiece that stands on the banks of the river, one of the most noted pieces of public architecture in the town. Inaugurated in 1930, the piece shows the river as a woman protecting the Belgian people.
