The town lighthouse is situated on the right hand bank of the river and was constructed in 1881, one hundred metres from the sea and 250 metres from the banks of the estuary. The twenty eight metre tower was criticised as being too far in land to perform a normal function, but quickly became accepted as a piece of local architecture of note.
