The Mercator is one of the most famous ships to be associated with Belgium in the modern age. It went on many fantastic voyages of discovery and has travelled all over the world, a fact of which the people of the city are very proud. It was still in use as a ship until 1960, when it was docked for the final time here in Oostende and turned into a small museum of the sea.
