The monastery dates from 1708, the west wing of which was extremely badly damaged by bombing in 1944 as part of the Battle of the Bulge. However, some of the monastery still remains, and in front of the building, a series of memorials have been erected to commemorate the men, women and children of many nationalities who lost their lives during this dark time for the town.
