The Vierboete was discovered by the Institute for Archaeological Patrimony by accident. Thought to date from 1284, these remains are what is left of the oldest lighthouse on the European coast. Sadly the tower was only destroyed in the 20th Century, and now it is being excavated, the importance of Nieuwpoort as a naval town is being re-evaluated.
