Zoutwerf would have been the place by the river where the salt was brought into the city, and then traded fiercely as it was a very sought after commodity back then. In the middle of the wharf stand De Zalm, translating as ‘The Salmon’, a former guild house for the fishmongers. It was built in 1530 and is thought to be the first house in Northern Europe to use a Renaissance façade.
