Alexander Rodenbach was a member of parliament and the mayor of the local area for many years in the late 18th and early 19th Century. He was a well loved leader and sis remembered for his devotion to the project of getting the canal that links the city with Leie constructed. This statue celebrates the well respected man who was a great believer in the Flemish national identity.
