Torhout was granted the privilege of town status in 1183 by Phillipe d’Alsace. Since that time it has been the obligation of the community, and the pleasure and proud duty of the people to provide a town hall to represent themselves. This beautiful building is of course not the original structure, but is a fine looking hall that contains interesting documents relating to the town.
